CHS Seminar: Lessons About Leadership: Developing a Culture of Discipline
CHS Seminar: Lessons About Leadership: Developing a Culture of Discipline
Presenter: Professor Lee Stewart, Dean, College of Healthcare Sciences
Date: Friday 6 May 2016
Time 3:00-4:00pm AEST
Location: 025-002 (JCU Townsville); D003-003 (JCU Cairns); A1-01 (JCU Singapore)
This seminar is about how to create a culture of self-discipline among people within an organisation. We do this to move away from the usual mistake of implementing a huge range of bureaucratic rules to deal with only the several people who aren't self-disciplined. Then we over-manage everybody which is extremely constraining for the organisation. This seminar will introduce ideas about creating a culture which allows us to get out of the way of good people so they can be magnificent instead of potentially becoming mediocre when blocked by out often unnecessary decrees.

What's in a Name?
What's in a name?
JCU Psychology senior lecturer David Cottrell has investigated the power of names, and has concluded he’s better off being David than Davy.
And even though four of the top ten names for girls in 2015 ended with the ‘ee’ sound, Sophias do better than Sophies, and Emmas have advantages over Emilys.
Here’s David explaining why on ABC Radio National:

Jocelyn Wale Seminar: Reclaiming Schemas in Schema Therapy: The Role of Emotional Learning
JOCELYN WALE SEMINAR SERIES
Date: 29th April 2016
Time: 4:00-5:30pm
Location: JCU Townsville (017-101); JCU Cairns A21-001); JCU Singapore (C1-08).
Presenter: Professor Bruce Stevens, Charles Sturt University
Title: Reclaiming Schemas in Schema Therapy: The Role of Emotional Learning.
Abstract: Schema Therapy is a highly effective therapy that has a growing evidence base of effectiveness with the most difficult of patients – those with a range of personality disorders. In recent years ST has changed direction from schemas to modes. In this paper I will argue for a return to schemas as domains of Emotional Learning. This is a concept from Coherence Therapy and I will suggest various techniques to uncover specific EL. The paper also introduces a mechanism of change of EL through memory reconsolidation from the neurosciences.

Presenter: Associate Professor Elsie Ho, The University of Auckland
Location: JCU Townsville (017-101); JCU Cairns (A21-001); JCU Singapore (C1-08).
Suicide is a serious public health problem around the world. This presentation focuses on suicide and suicide intervention within New Zealand’s fastest growing Asian communities. The research identifies trends, methods, as well as risk and protective factors of suicide within these communities. Addressing cultural factors is very important in developing strategies to prevent suicide in Asian communities. Approaches for supporting families and communities bereaved by suicide are also discussed.
