EOI for BNSc and BNSc-BMid Student Representatives from each year level and campus

Expressions of interest are sought for BNSc and BNSc-BMid Student Representatives from each year level and campus.

Purpose of the Role
The primary purpose of a Student Representative is to act as point of contact between the student community and the rest of discipline. By raising student matters and communicating student views, Student Representatives make a valuable contribution to Nursing, Midwifery and Nutrition’s decision-making and activities.

Responsibilities
While the role of Student Representatives offers ample scope for innovation, there are certain basic commitments set out below:

  • Meetings: Typically, Student Representatives attend two meetings per semester with the relevant year level coordinator.
  • General point of contact: Contact details for the Student Representatives are available to all students. In theory, any student could get in touch about any matter (and we encourage them to do so). In practice, this rarely happens and the onus is on Student Representatives themselves to keep their finger on the pulse of student matters.
  • Social events: Student representatives are responsible for coordinating social events.

Benefits
As well as playing a crucial role in the student experience there are benefits to you personally.  Some of the skills and experience you will gain from your experience as a Student Representative include:

  • Communication skills
  • Problem solving skills
  • Organisational skills
  • Team working skills
  • Help improve your course
  • Make a positive contribution for your fellow students

Please forward your expression of interest to your relevant year level coordinator by COB Friday 1st April:

First Year: peter.hartin@jcu.edu.au
Second Year: jane.oshannessy@jcu.edu.au
Third Year: tanya.langtree@jcu.edu.au

Jocelyn Wale Seminar: The Role of Motivational Factors in Predicting Physical Activity and Weight Management in Different Life Settings

Jocelyn Wale Seminar: The Role of Motivational Factors in Predicting Physical Activity and Weight Management in Different Life Settings

Presenter: Professor Nikos Ntoumanis, Curtin University
Date: Friday 1 April 2016
Time: 4:00pm-5:30pm AEST
Location: A21-001 (JCU Cairns); 017-101 (JCU Townsville); C1-08 (JCU Singapore)

The purpose of the talk is to provide an overview of studies that I have conducted over the last 10 years in an effort to understand the role of personal and contextual motivational factors in promoting (or undermining) physical activity engagement, weight management, and psychological well-being. I will be drawing primarily from Self-Determination Theory to illustrate how significant others (e.g., fitness instructors, physical education teachers, romantic partners) can impact on decisions to engage in physical activity and healthy diet. Evidence from survey and experimental work will be presented. I will also reflect on practical issues with regard to the implementation of self-determination theory-based interventions for delivering optimal motivational strategies.

Health workforce strategy development - Student survey

Queensland Health is embarking on the development of a statewide health workforce strategy to ensure that Queensland has a future health workforce that is capable, responsive, sustainable, and prepared to meet health service needs and expectations over the coming decade and beyond.  The demand for health services is expanding and expenditure on health care is rising with it. The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet's 2014 Reform of the Federation White Paper has outlined that, as our population increases and ages, as the burden of chronic disease grows, and as consumer expectations for better, faster, health services climb, the pressures on the health system and the health workforce are building.

Queensland Health is undertaking targeted consultation through a variety of mechanisms.  This online survey is one of a number of opportunities stakeholders will have to participate in information sharing and the provision of feedback.

  • This first online survey is targeted at participants in the future health workforce.
  • Survey respondents will be current students undertaking health studies with a view to working in a clinical or clinical support role (medical, nursing midwifery, allied health, dental, paramedicine, etc) and either studying in Queensland or undertaking clinical placements in Queensland.

The survey should not take any longer than 10 minutes to complete.
